A Brief History of Goddard
Like many Kansas towns, Goddard took root during the wave of settlement that followed the Civil War and the Homestead Act. John Coleman homesteaded the land that would become the town site in 1875, on ground that had once been part of the Osage Indian trust lands. In 1883, Ezekiel Wilder purchased the farm along the planned route of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and platted the original town that September.
The town took its name from J.F. Goddard, a surveyor who served as vice president and general manager of the Santa Fe. The railroad shaped the community from the start. Settlers had expected the tracks to run through nearby Blendon, but a second survey placed the line about a mile and a half south. Blendon followed the railroad, and several of its buildings were moved to Goddard, including a two-story town hall that landed at Third and Oak streets. Lumber intended for a Methodist church in Blendon was reloaded, hauled to Goddard, and built there instead.
The railroad and a post office both arrived in 1884, and the town officially incorporated in 1910. Main Street was the center of local business, with a bank that also housed the post office, a mercantile store, a garage, and a rooming house. A windmill stood in the middle of the street, and the town pump, drilled 146 feet deep, filled a cement tank where farmers watered their horses. A 1919 fire destroyed most of the buildings on the west side of Main Street, but the community rebuilt and kept growing.
In recent decades, Wichita’s expansion has transformed Goddard from a small farming town into a thriving suburb. The 2020 census counted 5,084 residents.
