What Happens During An Oral Cancer Screening?
Most people think of a dental visit as a time to get their teeth cleaned and check for cavities. But your general dentist does much more than that during a routine exam. One of the most important and often overlooked parts of a dental checkup is the oral cancer screening, a quick, painless, and potentially life-saving evaluation that takes only a few minutes.
Oral cancer affects tens of thousands of Americans every year, and like most cancers, early detection dramatically improves outcomes. The good news is that you don’t need a separate specialist appointment to get screened. At Cambridge Family Dentistry in Wichita, oral cancer screenings are a standard part of your preventive care.
What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?
An oral cancer screening is a visual and physical examination of the soft tissues in and around your mouth. Your general dentist is trained to recognize the early warning signs of oral cancer, including suspicious sores, patches, lumps, or other abnormalities that may not be causing any pain or discomfort yet.
Because early-stage oral cancer often has no obvious symptoms, many patients would never know to look for a problem on their own. That’s exactly why routine screenings matter so much.
Who Is at Risk for Oral Cancer?
While oral cancer can affect anyone, certain factors increase your risk. These include tobacco use in any form, heavy alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, a history of HPV infection, a previous oral cancer diagnosis, and a family history of cancer. That said, a significant number of oral cancer cases occur in people with no known risk factors at all, which is another reason your general dentist recommends regular screenings for all patients.
What Does the Screening Actually Involve?
The process is straightforward and completely noninvasive. Here is what you can expect during a standard oral cancer screening at our Wichita office:
- Visual inspection of the lips and face. Your dentist will begin by looking at the outside of your mouth, checking your lips, skin, and facial symmetry for any visible concerns.
- Examination of the inside of your mouth. Using a light and mirror, your dentist will look at your gums, the roof of your mouth, the inside of your cheeks, and the floor of your mouth.
- Tongue evaluation. Your dentist will ask you to move your tongue to different positions so they can examine all surfaces, including the underside, which is a common area for abnormalities to develop.
- Throat and tonsil check. The back of the throat and tonsil area are also inspected for unusual tissue changes.
- Physical palpation of the neck and jaw. Your dentist will gently press along your neck, jaw, and under your chin to feel for enlarged lymph nodes or unusual lumps beneath the surface.
The entire process typically takes just a few minutes and is painless.
What Happens If Something Looks Unusual?
Finding something during a screening does not automatically mean you have cancer. Many findings turn out to be benign, such as canker sores, minor irritation, or harmless tissue variations. However, if your general dentist notices anything that warrants a closer look, they will let you know and may recommend a follow-up visit, a biopsy, or a referral to a specialist. The key is that catching a potential issue early, when it is most treatable, is always better than waiting.
How Often Should You Be Screened?
For most patients, an oral cancer screening is incorporated into your regular dental checkups, which your general dentist recommends at least twice a year. If you have known risk factors, your dentist may suggest more frequent evaluations or additional monitoring. Staying consistent with your dental visits is one of the simplest things you can do to protect your overall health, not just your teeth.
