1. Take 13th St east into Wichita, then turn right onto Webb Rd. After you pass the 19th St intersection, turn right into our parking lot, and we’re at 2020 N Webb Rd Ste 301.
2. Take 21st St east into Wichita, then turn left onto Webb Rd. Turn left again before you get to the Wilson Estates.

 

How Much Local History Do You Know?

Originally known as Minneha and later referred to as Cloud City, Andover has a rich and dynamic history. The inaugural township election took place on April 9, 1872, leading to the issuance of bonds to finance the completion of a railway through Cloud City, which was finished in 1880. On June 7, 1880, following a disagreement between Mr. Cloud and the local community, the town was renamed Andover.

The first commercial establishment in Andover was a trading post offering a wide variety of goods. Shortly after, in 1881, J.C. Lines opened the first hotel. The community continued to grow, establishing its first school in 1882 at a cost of $2,000, with an initial enrollment of 86 students. By 1883, Andover’s population had reached 150 residents, supporting a hotel, grocery store, lumber company, shoemaker, livestock business, coal and grain suppliers, a meat market, and the railway. The town’s rail connection was highlighted by the arrival of its first passenger train in 1885, with the last one passing through in October 1960.

A notable incident in Andover’s history occurred on the evening of July 17, 1898, when a dramatic train robbery unfolded. Depot Agent S.B. McClaren, forced to flag down the train, managed to escape and alert the townspeople at a nearby Methodist Church, where an ice cream social was underway. 

During the robbery, 28-year-old Will Belford attempted to thwart the bandits but was fatally shot, succumbing to his injuries five weeks later. The criminals were eventually apprehended on August 12, 1898, in Maize, Kansas. Following their trial in Butler County Court, Sam Smith was convicted of first-degree murder and hanged, while Thomas Wind received a sentence for second-degree murder and was sent back to prison, marking a tumultuous chapter in Andover’s past.
