Tooth Extraction Aftercare: A Professional’s Guide to a Speedy Recovery | Tooth Extractions, Wichita

Tooth Extractions Wichita
Image Description

Tooth extractions are necessary for a variety of different reasons, from overcrowded teeth to long-term tooth decay, and require the affected tooth to be removed entirely from the mouth. After undergoing a tooth extraction, you should follow some simple steps to encourage a quick and healthy recovery. At Cambridge Family Dentistry, our team has performed countless tooth extractions in Wichita, Kansas, and has detailed everything you need to know about tooth extraction aftercare. Learn more below!

  • Ice the Affected Area Following Surgery

For the first day following surgery, use an ice pack to minimize swelling of the affected area. When icing, remember it’s best to practice 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off; you can also opt to apply a warm washcloth or moist heat the day after surgery for some added comfort. While minor swelling can be expected, contact your dentist immediately if you begin experiencing excessive swelling accompanied by severe pain or a fever.

  • Take Pain Medication As Directed

Contrary to what you may think, you should begin taking pain medication before the numbness wears off to avoid increased pain levels following the procedure. Certain medications may cause minor side effects, such as an upset stomach or lightheadedness, so getting adequate rest and eating with your medications will help alleviate these side effects. If your doctor has prescribed an antibiotic, remember to take it as directed and complete the full course of medication!

  • Get Plenty of Rest

Patients undergoing tooth extractions in Wichita should get plenty of rest following surgery, making sure to keep the head in an elevated position to encourage quicker healing. Additionally, limit physical activity and overexertion for the first 72 hours. While most patients are safe to return to work within a day or two, you may require a few additional days off work if you have a job that requires heavy lifting or a significant amount of physical labor.

  • Eat Softer Foods

Avoid any types of crunchy or hard foods following your tooth extraction. Instead, pre-fill your fridge and pantry with softer food options such as rice, pasta, soup, yogurt, and applesauce to reduce your chewing and lessen your chances of food particles getting trapped in the empty socket. In addition to consuming soft foods, avoid drinking through a straw to prevent blood clots and dry sockets.
