Mini Dental Implants: Hows and Whys

Our motto: Simple and Painless!

Mini Dental Implants vs Traditional Implants

The procedure for mini dental implants is performed at our outpatient clinic with local anesthesia. The installation procedure usually takes only one appointment, and the actual procedure can be completed in one to two hours.

Once the patient is anesthetized, a small drill is used to make a tiny hole through the gum tissue and into the jaw bone. The mini dental implants are then inserted using precision hand-tools, which give tactile feedback to the clinician and direct him or her in the best way to proceed for each patient.

A measurement of torque resistance is taken at the end to judge the initial mechanical stability.  In most cases, this will confirm that the implant is ready to handle loading.

Once the mini dental implants are completed, the prosthetic tooth or teeth, bridge, or plate is fitted and securely attached.

Because of the minimally-invasive nature of the procedure, the mini implant placement doesn’t result in prolonged bleeding or require a lengthy healing period. You can usually eat comfortably that same afternoon, using your new, and permanent teeth.

Here are some common questions about mini dental implants which our patients ask:

Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is done with local anesthetic. Unlike conventional implants, mini dental implants are usually placed using an incisionless procedure.

What happens after the procedure?
There is usually little discomfort, if any. Those who do experience some discomfort find it generally subsides within a couple of days and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen.

What will the first day be like?
Your new teeth will feel stable and secure, and you should not experience any excessive bleeding. You can eat whenever you want to, but we may advise you to avoid very hard or sticky foods a limited period of time.
